Applewhite officially signs with Racers
MBB: The Portland-transfer will have three years of eligibility remaining
Murray State Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Prohm announced the signing of Alden Applewhite on Tuesday. Applewhite’s signing officially fills Prohm’s roster for the 2023-24 season as Prohm has now used his 13th and final available scholarship. Applewhite originally committed to the Racers back on May 10th.
The 6’7 Memphis product signed with Mississippi State back in 2021-22, but only played in two games before suffering a season-ending injury. Applewhite then transferred to Portland last season, where he averaged 7.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 32 games with the Pilots. While he scored a season-high 20 points against UC-Riverside, Applewhite also scored 16 points against Michigan State and 14 points against North Carolina last season.
"We are excited to get Alden into our program," Prohm said today in a statement. "Alden is an experienced player and his versatility, length and size on the perimeter will be a benefit to us. We always want to recruit in the Memphis area because it has been very good to our program with the many talented players that have come to play for Murray State. He has an opportunity to improve his game and immerse himself into our culture."
There is still uncertainly whether Applewhite will be able to play this season for the Racers. Making his second transfer, Applewhite will need a waiver from the NCAA to be able to play without sitting out a season. As soon as I get clarification on that waiver, I’ll be sure to pass it along.
