On August 2nd, 1991, an emotional Scott Edgar stood in front of a podium, addressing Murray State fans, boosters and administrators. He described becoming Murray State’s new men’s basketball coach as ranking only behind the birth of his son and his wedding day.
The honeymoon in Murray didn’t last long.
“After everybody had gone, (Murray State Athletics Director) Mike Strickland and (Murray State Vice President for University Relations) Don Kassing, we’re kind of sitting here,” Edgar remembered. “Don said, ‘We’ve handed you a mess.’ I said, ‘Well, we’ll see.’ We had like four players – four eligible guys. There were a few guys still trying to finish junior college to get eligible. (Assistant coaches) Kenny Roth, Eddie Fields, and I just gathered names out of scouting reports.”
“But we had Popeye Jones.”
