ESPN predicts Young to win MVC POY award
WBB: Young was the 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year
Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Media Day is in two weeks in Moline, Illinois, and that’s when we’ll learn all of the preseason accolades that will be handed out. If you listen to ESPN Women’s Basketball Analyst Charlie Creme, he believes it will be a big year for Racer forward Katelyn Young.
Creme listed his favorite to win Player of the Year honors in all 32 conferences, and he believes when the dust settles, Young will be the Missouri Valley’s top player this season.
“Had the Racers been more successful last season (8th place in the MVC), Young might be going for a POY three-peat,” Creme wrote. “She won it in the OVC in 2022 and then led the MVC in scoring (21.4 PPG) and rebounding (7.8 RPG) a year ago. According to HerHoopStats' advance metrics, she was 12th in the country in offensive win shares.”
Young was one of only six players in the country last year to average at least 21.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. She has scored 1,687 points in her first three years at Murray State, which is good for 8th all-time in program history. Young needs 601 points this season to pass Sheila Smith to become Murray State’s all-time leading scorer. For those counting at home, Young scored 643 and 662 points in each of her last two seasons.
