Guffey gets head coaching job in Florida
WBB: The Murray State Hall of Famer has her first collegiate head coaching job
Daytona State College, a junior college in Daytona Beach, Florida, has announced Amber Guffey will be their new women’s basketball coach.
Guffey will be the sixth head coach in Daytona State’s history. This is the first collegiate head coaching job in Guffey’s career.
There are few people that have had a bigger impact on Murray State’s women’s basketball program than Guffey. As a player, she earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors three times, and was the 2008 OVC Tournament MVP after she helped lead the Racers to their first, and to this point only, trip to the NCAA Tournament. Guffey is fifth on Murray State’s all-time scoring list with 1,877 points, and when she graduated, she was the program’s leader in assists, free throws made, games played and minutes played. Guffey’s 210 career three-pointers are third-most in program history, while her 512 career assists are second behind only Macey Turley.
Guffey was inducted into Murray State’s Hall of Fame in 2018.
After spending two seasons on Rechelle Turner’s staff at Murray High School, Turley came back to Murray State when Turner took over the Racer program in 2017. In her six seasons as an assistant coach and under Turner, Guffey helped the Racers win 22 games in 2022. It was the most wins for the Racer program since 2009 — during Guffey’s senior season.
Guffey will take over a Daytona State program that went 16-14 last season. Her first day on the job will be July 9th.
