'Kate the Great' is new all-time leading scorer
WBB: Young passes Sheila Smith to become new program scoring leader
After a record-setting career at Murray State, Katelyn Young has now broken the greatest record of them all.
Young’s basket with 9:41 left in the first quarter of Murray State’s WNIT game with Southern Miss gave her 2,288 career points as she is now Murray State’s all-time leading scorer. The senior forward passed Racer Hall of Famer Sheila Smith to take over the #1 spot.
The Oakwood, Illinois product has started all 122 games in her Racer career.
As a freshman, Young averaged 14.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game as she was named First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference’s and a spot on the OVC’s All-Newcomer Team.
As a sophomore, Young was the OVC Player of the Year, averaging 20.1 points and 8.1 rebounds. She was also named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American.
In her junior year, Young and Murray State transitioned to the Missouri Valley Conference without her missing a beat. On her way to earning First Team All-Conference honors, Young averaged a career-best 21.4 points and grabbed 7.8 rebounds a night.
This year, Young became the 5th player in program history to score her 2,000th career-point. She also helped lead the Racers to a 20-win season for the second time in three years, and just the sixth time in program history.
