Mattox new Morehead State head coach
MBB: He was at Morehead for nine years before coming to Murray State
Morehead State announced Friday morning that Murray State Assistant Coach Jonathan Mattox is their new men’s basketball coach. Mattox replaces Preston Spradlin who took over the program at James Madison last month.
"I'm so excited to be back as the head men's basketball coach at Morehead State!" Mattox said in a statement. "This institution and this community mean a lot to my family and I. My wife, Katie and kids are excited to be back; It feels like coming home. I'm looking forward to continuing the tradition that is Morehead State Men's Basketball."
Mattox was one of Steve Prohm’s first hires in the spring of 2022 when Prohm returned to Murray State. Before coming to Murray, Mattox had been on staff at Morehead State for nine seasons — working his way up from Graduate Manager to Associate Head Coach during that time.
“I’m really excited to Johnny and his family for this opportunity,” Prohm said. “He will do an amazing job as the leader of the Morehead State Men’s Basketball Program. We all wish him and his family nothing but the best and we will miss their impact on Murray, Kentucky and the University.”
Mattox is the 15th head coach in Morehead State’s history. This will be his first head coaching position.
