Miller hints at some Racers returning next season
MBB: Murray State's new head coach will be officially introduced on Thursday
In a podcast interview released this morning, new Murray State Head Coach Ryan Miller said there may be several Racers from last year’s roster that will be back with the program next year.
Talking with Mike’l Severe on “The Let It Fly Show”, Miller joked that he didn’t have any team right now when asked what kind of squad he had waiting for him in Murray, but he did add there will likely be some guys back for another season in a Racer uniform.
“I’ve got a couple holdovers, like three or four holdovers,” Miller said. “We'll be working the portal and we'll be putting our roster and our identity together sooner than later. The portal opened (Monday), so the staff and I have been working that portal relentlessly, so we’ve got to put together a team, basically. There's a few good players in the program that are there. They'll be solid contributors to what we're trying to do, but more than anything, we need to put our culture and our footprint and our stamp on what's going on out there.”
You can watch the entire interview here:
Since the transfer portal opened on Monday, freshmen forwards John McCrear and Chiang Ring, along with junior forward KyeRon Lindsay have entered the portal. Remember, just because a player enters the portal doesn’t mean they technically can’t return to Murray State.
Incoming freshman Trey Simpson announced earlier this month he was reopening his recruitment.
Miller is arriving in Murray on Wednesday night for the very first time, so it’s unclear if he’s had the chance to meet with every player still on the roster.
As of today, here are the players that could potentially return next season:
Senior forward Alden Applewhite
Junior guard Patrick Chew
Senior forward Nick Ellington (who gains an extra year of eligibility due to his playing two seasons of junior college)
Sophomore forward Jordan McCullum
Senior guard Justin Morgan
Incoming freshman guard Tristian Ford
Incoming freshman guard Kaden Rickard
Those are obviously seven names, and Miller said he’d likely have “three of four holdovers.” We hope to get some clarity on the roster for 2025-26 during Miller’s introductory news conference at 12:00pm Thursday at the CFSB Center.
