Perry still weighing NBA options
MBB: Perry has until May 31st to take his name out of the NBA Draft pool
Last Tuesday, the National Basketball Association released their list of 242 players who have filed as early-entry candidates for the 2023 NBA Draft. Among those 242 players is Murray State’s Rob Perry.
Perry announced on social media on March 27th he would be declaring himself eligible for the draft, but would be maintaining his college eligibility. If he decides to return to school, he will still have one year to play with the Racers.
In the end, the vast majority of those 242 players will ultimately return to school. Going through the draft process is a risk-free opportunity for the players to get feedback from NBA teams and give them a better sense of what they need to work on and see where their professional prospects currently sit. While sources around the Racer program believe Perry will in fact return to Murray State for his senior season, that decision has not been publicly made.
“I can’t answer for Rob, and I won’t,” Murray State Head Coach Steve Prohm said. “That’s not my job to do that. I’ve been through this. I’ve had 12 NBA guys. I’ve had guys test the waters; I’ve had guys not want to test the waters; I’ve had guys leave as freshmen; I’ve had guys leave as sophomores. I’ve seen everything. My job as the head coach is to support Rob through this process, educate him, give him feedback, and we’ve done that. Rob’s had a terrific spring. I’m excited about Rob and the future that he has going into next year, but that’s for Rob to communicate. I think there’s areas I needed to challenge him in and our staff did. I talked to several teams to help him. I think we’ve done that and we’ll continue to do that through the course of the next month.”
Perry has until May 31st to take his name out of the draft. Our request to interview Perry about his decision was declined.
Perry earned spots on the All-Missouri Valley Conference Third Team and the All-Newcomer Team last season. After transferring in from Stetson, Perry led the Racers in scoring with 14.4 points per game. He scored a season-high 30 points in an overtime win at Valparaiso on December 4th.
If Perry does return to play his final college season, Prohm and his staff will still have two scholarships to fill for the 2023-24 season.
