Prohm adds final piece to 2023-24 roster
MBB: Portland transfer Alden Applewhite committed to the Racers Wednesday
Murray State Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Prohm, barring any surprise last-minute defections, completed his 2023-24 roster Wednesday when Alden Applewhite committed to play for the Racers.
The Memphis native originally signed with Mississippi State for the 2021-22 season. He only played in two games before injuries ended his season, allowing him to earn a medical redshirt. Applewhite transferred to Portland last season where he played 32 games, starting five times, while averaging 7.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
With the new NCAA transfer rules, Applewhite, on paper, won’t be able to play this upcoming season unless he gets a waiver for transferring after two-straight seasons.
If Applewhite, who could have up to three years of eligibility remaining, can play right away, he’d give the Racers some much-needed size. At 6-foot-7, Applewhite has shown the ability to score at all three levels. You can watch some of his highlights from last season here.
The southpaw only averaged about five shots per game, but shot 53.8% from inside the arc and 31.1% from three-point range.
Once he is officially signed and Prohm is able to comment on him, we’ll have a better idea if Applewhite will be able to get the waiver and play right away next season.
