The San Antonio Spurs waived Cameron Payne today, leaving the former Murray State great without a basketball home for the time being.
When Phoenix traded Payne to San Antonio back in July, there was a belief that Payne would be able to come in and help mentor the Spurs’ young guards as San Antonio begins to rebuild their franchise. But the Spurs have opted to give those guards significant minutes, which would apparently limit Payne’s playing time.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski believes this move will pave the way for Payne to join a contending team that can offer him a larger role. If Payne isn’t claimed off waivers in the next 48 hours, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
The 29-year-old Payne played well last season as Chris Paul’s backup in Phoenix, averaging 10.3 points and 4.5 assists in 48 games for the Suns. He also had a 31-point performance against Denver in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
