Coming off their magical 2023 Final Four run, American Athletic Conference coaches have voted Florida Atlantic as the preseason pick to win the AAC. The Owls picked up 11 of a possible 14 first-place votes in the poll.
SMU, under second-year coach Rob Lanier, was picked 7th in the poll. The Mustangs are coming off a season where they finished 10-22 overall and 5-13 in the AAC.
Along with 6’5 junior guard Zhuric Phelps, the team’s leading scorer from a year ago, Lanier dipped into the transfer portal to add some key pieces for this season. The Mustangs added Chuck Harris (10.4 points at Butler last season), BJ Edwards from Tennessee and Denver Anglin from Georgetown. Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney calls SMU a “potential sleeper” in the AAC.
SMU will make their first-ever visit to Murray when they play the Racers at the CFSB Center on December 22nd.
