As conference media days continue to roll out across the country, Murray State’s men now know they’ll be facing at least one preseason favorite to win their conference.
The Southland Conference announced Southeastern Louisiana is the preseason pick to win the league this year. Southeastern Louisiana will play at Murray State on Saturday, December 16th. Murray State Head Coach Steve Prohm spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana under Billy Kennedy from 1999-2005. Kennedy took the Lions to their only NCAA Tournament in 2005.
The Lions are coming off an 18-14 season, where they finished 12-6 in the Southland and finished in 2nd place in the regular season. They return junior guard Roger McFarlane, who was First Team All-Conference last season while averaging 12.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. McFarlane also shot 40.2% from three-point range. He earned a spot on the Southland’s Preseason First Team this year as well.
Two Southeastern Louisiana played earned spots on the Southland’s Preseason Second Team. The first is senior guard Nick Caldwell, who averaged 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds last season. The other is fifth-year guard Alec Woodard. Woodard shot 45.6% from beyond the arc last year, while scoring 8.5 points per game.
Before they make it to Murray in mid-December, the Lions will be well tested. Southeastern Louisiana has early road games at Auburn, BYU, Santa Clara, LSU and Louisiana Tech.
