Williams ends Summer League run with OKC
MBB: The Thunder lost their last game in Las Vegas Sunday night
The Oklahoma City Thunder ended their 2023 Summer League season Sunday night with a 98-94 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
Former Murray State standout KJ Williams was held scoreless in the game in just six minutes of action. Williams picked up two early fouls and did not return to the game.
Last night’s disappointment shouldn’t put much of a damper on a successful summer for Williams with the Thunder. Oklahoma City played in both the Salt Lake City and Las Vegas summer leagues and Williams saw action in each place. In the four games he played, Williams averaged 7.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. While he struggled from three-point range (1-of-9 overall), Williams shot 60.0% from inside the arc (12-of-20). His best game came in Las Vegas last Tuesday when he scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against Houston.
The next important date for Williams is September 27th — that’s when NBA training camps open. Between now and then, he’s hoping to grab an invite to Oklahoma City’s camp.
Again, the odds of Williams making the Thunder’s opening day roster are slim, but he has other options. He can either be signed by a G League team, or earn a two-way contract with an NBA franchise. For the uninitiated, NBA teams have three “two-way” roster spots which allows them to have players simultaneously on their NBA team and G League affiliate rosters. If neither of those options work, Williams can always explore playing overseas. Those decisions will be made over the next ten weeks.
