Young named Hammon Award semifinalist
WBB: The award is given to the top Mid-Major player in the country
Murray State senior forward Katelyn Young has been named one of ten semifinalists for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.
Young was not on the Hammon Award midseason watch list that was released back in January. The website that promotes the award makes it clear players can play themselves on or off the list as the season progresses, and Young has certainly earned her spot with her outstanding play this year.
The senior forward is one of six players in the country this year to be averaging 20.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. With 2,737 career points, Young has moved into 38th on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list. She is four points away from passing, coincidentally, Becky Hammon on the all-time list.
Young is joined on the list of semifinalists by: Ball State’s Ally Becki; Drake’s Katie Dinnebier; Duquesne’s Megan McConnell; Gonzaga’s Yvonne Ejim; Harvard’s Harmoni Turner; Norfolk State’s Diamond Johnson; Richmond’s Maggie Doogan; Saint Joseph’s Laura Ziegler; and South Dakota’s Grace Larkins.
The five finalists will be announced in early March. The winner will be announced around the Final Four.
