Young named National Player of Week
WBB: The US Basketball Writers Association honored the senior forward
The United States Basketball Writers Association has named Murray State’s Katelyn Young this week’s National Player of the Week. Young scored 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds against Indiana State on Friday, then followed that up with 25 points and seven rebounds against Evansville on Sunday.
Behind Young’s strong performances, Murray State won both games last week and have stretched their season-long winning streak to six games.
The fifth-year senior, who is already Murray State’s all-time leading scorer, has moved into the Top 50 on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list with 2,660 points. Young needs 49 points to move into the Top 40 on that list.
In the Racers’ last two games, Young scored at least 25 points for the 30th and 31st times in her career. She has scored a total of 84 points in her last three games, which is her best three-game scoring stretch since February of 2023.
Young is one of seven players in the country this year to be averaging at least 19.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
Murray State will travel to Belmont on Saturday as the Racers will look to hold on to at least a share of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference.
